You say there's a story I will be listening to. What kind of story?
It's like going to a Broadway musical. And of course Broadway musicals are generally romantic light comedies. It's the story of a man and his dog, a beautiful heiress and a taxi driver who wants her diamond. There is, of course, a connection. (and not between the taxi driver and the dog). But you will be learning French through story, music and song.
I'm not exactly a beginner. I took some French classes.
This will still improve your listening comprehension, which will lead to improved fluency.
Okay, I'm an absolutely beginner. Will it help me:
You will love it.
How can I get some assistance?
Please email support@languageandlyrics.com or call (405) 708-5772
for any questions or assistance.
Will I be able to understand the story?
Absolutely. It is written in beginning French. Light translation and questions will guide you through it.
How will just listening help me to speak?
You're not "just" listening, as if you were listening to a lecture. You are listening actively. The story is engaging you, the songs are catchy and because they follow the story, easy to understand. But the questions and responses after each section of story are extremely important. The responses are simple, often just "oui" or 'non." That why you are focusing on what you hear, not what you say. This is active listening. Speaking will come somewhat spontaneously.
How many times am I supposed to listen to each chapter?
That's up to you, but generally, I recommend listening to the story and then the questions, then going back, section by section if necessary. You're ready to go on to the second chapter, when you can answer the questions. The chapters are rich with content, so you could learn a lot from each one. Take your time and enjoy the story.
I would like to teach my 6 year old, and myself, French as a homeschooling class. Would this be easy enough for her?
It's a great idea and I know families which are doing this. The key is to expose them to French. You learn and they listen to you learn. They chime in where they can. Does your 6 year old follow plots very well on TV? If so, they will be intrigued by the story. However, I was working with a seven year old recently, and because I have learned French, I began to ask him simple questions. Are you a boy? Are you a girl? Are you a dog? This builds up their interest and as your fluency grows, theirs grows.
So what is the best age to begin with "Il Fait Beau?"
Of course it depends. Generally, if they are able to watch a TV program with at least a boy meets girl type of plot, and follow it. They are ready to tackle it independently. Any younger than that and they will need an adult working with them closely.
